The American Curl cat is named for its distinctive backward-curled ears, which give it a unique shell-like appearance. And while they may look similar to the Scottish Fold, these two breeds are genetically unrelated and have different traits.
Known for their sociable nature, American Curls are far more outgoing than most cats. They enjoy greeting their families at the door and often follow them from room to room. These friendly cats tend to get along well with children and other pets, making them great companions.
American Curls come in a wide range of colors and patterns, with both long and short hair varieties. Their coats are typically soft and silky, and they have very little undercoat, which keeps them low-maintenance in terms of grooming.

Nutration:
American Curl cats don’t have any unique nutritional needs, but like all cats, they thrive on a high-quality, meat-based diet. While they’re known for their sweet and friendly personalities, they remain obligate carnivores, meaning they rely on animal-based proteins to stay healthy.
Grooming:
Like all cats, the American Curl is generally good at grooming itself. However, a light brushing a few times a week can help keep their coat looking its best. Regular nail trims and occasional ear cleaning are also important to maintain their overall hygiene and comfort.
Exercise:
American Curl cats are playful and love interactive games with their families. They’re particularly fond of playing fetch and will quickly learn how to carry small balls, toys, or even crumpled pieces of paper around the house. While their unique appearance sets them apart, American Curls share a love for climbing and scratching with many other cats. Providing a multilevel cat tree, a comfy window perch, and a variety of toys will keep them entertained and active. As you might expect, American Curl cats have some unique ear care needs. The lower part of their ear cartilage is stiff and stable, while the upper portion is thin and delicate. It’s also important to keep an eye out for signs of ear infections, as the shape of their ears can make them more susceptible. History
The American Curl cat’s lineage can be traced back to a stray, long-haired black female cat named Shulamith, who found a home with a family in Lakewood, California, in 1981. When she gave birth to a litter of kittens six months later, they all had the same unique curled ears as their mother.
Selective breeding of the American Curl began in 1983. It was soon discovered that the gene responsible for their signature curled ears is autosomal dominant, meaning that any cat with even one copy of the gene will exhibit the curled ear trait.
Feline geneticist Roy Robinson played a key role in the breed’s development, carefully analyzing crosses and finding no genetic defects. Since then, the American Curl has become a beloved breed, known for its good health, striking appearance, and exceptional, friendly personality.
